The claw is retracted when tension is applied to the extensor tendon above the center of rotation. This moves the claw upward and backward. When tension is applied below the center of rotation through the flexor tendon, the claw is extended. The cat’s ability to retract its claws prevents their becoming blunted by contact against the ground. To keep the front claws sharp, cats pull them against tree bark or other tough materials.
